These tried and true favorites are always on a Master Gardener’s shopping list:
Spring to Summer – Delphinium, Penta, Portulaca, Pursulane, Cosmos, ‘Wave’ Petunias and Plumbago.
Summer – Esparanza, Zinnias, and Marigolds.
Winter – Snapdragons, Pansies and Violas.
- Delphiniums – Also called Larkspur. Light to full sun. Sow seed in the fall.
- Pentas – Light shade to full sun. A favorite of butterflies.
- Portulaca – Groundcover with spiky foliage. Full sun. Similar to Pursulane.
- Purslane – Many colors. Tear drop shaped leaves. Full sun.
- Cosmos – Full Sun. Easy to plant from seed.
- ‘Wave’ Petunias – Many colors available. Full sun.
- Plumbago – Full Sun.
- Esparanza – Full Sun.
- Zinnias – Many colors and many varieties. Easy to start from seed. Full sun.
- Marigolds – Full Sun. Easy to start from seed.
- Snapdragons are just one example of cool season bloomers.
- Pansies – Light shade to full sun.
